The most iconic cocktail in history. Gin or vodka with dry vermouth, stirred or shaken. James Bond made shaken not stirred famous but purists insist on stirring. The olive or lemon twist garnish is debated. Jerry Thomas included a Martinez recipe in 1887, a likely ancestor. FDR mixed them during Prohibition.
