Masala Chai
About Masala Chai
Chai simply means tea in Hindi; masala chai is the spiced version, black tea simmered with milk, sugar and spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and black pepper. Spiced drinks have a long history in India, but tea-based chai spread widely only in the 20th century, after the British planted tea in Assam and the Indian Tea Association promoted tea drinking. Street vendors called chai wallahs brew it fresh all day. India is the second-largest tea producer after China and one of the largest consumers.
